Aloha at the Balch: A Hawaiian-Inspired Evening in the Columbia Gorge

For one weekend each Labor Day, the historic Balch Hotel trades pine trees for palm fronds, hosting a luau unlike anything else in the Gorge — all in support of Pink Sistas Breast Cancer Support.

There's a moment every September when the Historic Balch Hotel stops looking like Oregon. Tiki torches line the entrance. The scent of fresh flowers hangs in the air. And for one night, guests trade the high desert for the islands without ever leaving Dufur.

Aloha at the Balch is a Hawaiian-inspired fundraising luau benefiting Pink Sistas Breast Cancer Support, presented by Fruit & Flower Creations. It's part destination getaway, part cultural celebration, part community fundraiser and it's become one of the most anticipated nights of the Labor Day weekend.

An Island Welcome

The evening opens at 4:00 PM with the Hawaiian Pū Pū Reception. Every guest is greeted with a fresh flower lei and a tropical welcome cocktail, then settles in for an hour and a half of live Hawaiian music, small-plate bites, and Gorge views that stretch for miles.

A Feast Worth the Trip

As the sun dips lower, guests move into an authentic luau buffet dinner; a spread built around island staples and fresh, seasonal ingredients. It's a meal designed to be shared, with plenty of time to catch up with old friends and make new ones before the entertainment begins.

Hula, Fire, and the Main Stage

Once dinner winds down, the night shifts into its centerpiece: live entertainment on the main stage. The Pacific University Hawaiian Club and professional hula dancers bring traditional performances and cultural storytelling to the Gorge, building toward a fire knife demonstration that never fails to draw gasps from the crowd.

Giving Back, Island Style

Beneath the music and the cocktails, the evening has real purpose. Every ticket, auction bid, and raffle entry supports Pink Sistas Breast Cancer Support and its work providing relaxing, no-cost retreats for women facing breast cancer. Guests can browse the silent auction throughout the night and enter to win a Hawaiian vacation for two, drawn live before the after party begins.

The Night Doesn't End at Dinner

As the formal program wraps up, the party moves outdoors for the Island After Party; fire pits, cocktails, and music under the stars. It's the part of the evening where the schedule falls away and guests just enjoy being somewhere that, for one night, feels a world away from home.
